More about the Programs We Support

VAPA

VAPA is Richland's Visual Arts and Performing Arts program.  Students meet with the VAPA instructor, Ms. Stone, once a week to work on their visual arts, music, theater, music and dance skills.  Each grade level has the chance to perform for friends and family at school events like Halloween Carnival and Open House. Click below for more information and a schedule of performances for upcoming events.

AR

(Accelerated Reader)

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a software program intended to encourage reading and help children at school practice their comprehension skills. The program also provides teachers with an assessment of the student’s reading. Comprehension is assessed by means of a computer-based quiz that tests general knowledge of a book in a multiple choice format of 3-20 questions.  Throughout the year, students are awarded with dog tags for each level they achieve at Flag Salute. Students can work on AR at the beginning of the day from 8:15 until 8:45 in designated locations on campus or at specified times during class.

Reading Intervention

Due to changes to budget and staffing administration at Richland requested additional funding from the FOR Club to support our Reading Intervention Program. These funds will be used to bring on aides to support our students and teachers.   If you have any questions, please contact us using the link below.

Track and Field

Art programs are an important part of a student’s well-rounded education.  Each year, FOR Club supports our Arts Programs by providing supplies and funds which allow our students to have a meaningful art experience at school.  If you are interested in sponsoring the Art Program please click below.

PE Supplies

The Richland Physical Education (PE) program follows the SMUSD board policies and the Department of California Education guidelines. Students in 1st-5th grade receive an average of 200 minutes every 10 days with physical activity to improve their physical health and well being. The FOR Club helps to support the PE program by providing supplies and equipment when needs arise.

Ukelele

Ukulele Club started in 2018/19 school year and was fully funded by the FOR Club.  Classes are led by our VAPA instructor, Ms. Stone, and students can use the instruments provided by Richland or bring their own ukulele to campus. Students meet at 7:45 one time a week and perform a few times during the school year.  This was a very popular club last year and unfortunately we can only accommodate 60 students per semester. We are asking for a $20 registration fee per student for the semester to participate. However, we do not want to turn any student away due to funding. If you have a student interested in The Ukulele Club and are unable to afford the $20 registration please email forclubtreasurer@gmail.com

Running Club

Running Club gives children the opportunity to spend time with friends while getting outside exercise. Beginning in September, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:15-8:45am, students are invited to join in the fun with the running club on the upper grassy lawn area. Incentive prizes are earned for completing various mileage milestones (5 miles, 10 miles, 20 miles, etc).  More information will be available at the beginning of the school year.

Library Support

The Richland library is a learning hub for students allowing them the opportunity to develop their literacy skills. During the school year the library is open every weekday at 8:15 and throughout the school day.  FOR Club has allocated funds for some updates to library decor and technology. If any parents or local companies are interested in further supporting our school library program please click below.

Art Programs and Supplies

Art programs are an important part of a student’s well-rounded education.  Each year, FOR Club supports our Arts Programs by providing supplies and funds which allow our students to have a meaningful art experience at school.  If you are interested in sponsoring the Art Program please click below.

STEAM

STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Every month students participate in a full day of enrichment in one area of the program. We are fortunate to have a STEAM coordinator dedicated to the planning, implementation, and facilitation of these learning experiences. This program is funded by FOR Club, and relies heavily on volunteer hours from parents, teachers, and staff. Each school year we ask parents to donate their time for one STEAM day.

Makerspace

Makerspace provides hands on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they engage in the different areas of STEAM.  It provides a collaborative workspace and time for students to explore, fail, retry, and share their ideas with others. To participate, students submit a proposal for a project they would like to work on to the STEAM Coordinator.  Upon approval, students are able to use Makerspace during recess, lunch, or other designated learning times to work on their projects.

Luminary Arts

FOR Club contracts with Luminary Arts to produce our Winter Choir and our Spring Play.   Luminary Arts was created with the idea that all students TK to grade 12 should be given high-quality arts instruction across all schools in the district and in all disciplines.  Students are given the opportunity to replace a music only model with one that brought in high-quality teaching artists to expose ALL students to the three main performing arts disciplines: theatre, dance, and music. Last year over 100 students participated in Luminary Arts and we look forward to another outstanding year.
