STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.STEAM is a way to take the benefits of STEM and complete the package by integrating these principles in and through the arts. STEAM takes STEM to the next level: it allows students to connect their learning in these critical areas together with arts practices, elements, design principles, and standards to provide the whole pallet of learning at their disposal. STEAM removes limitations and replaces them with wonder, critique, inquiry, and innovation. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process.
Shadow A Mustang

Shadow a Mustang is one day a year that adults can come onto campus and walk through the day with their Mustang. Come for the day and watch as your Mustang walks through all the different stations of STEAM.
To live a creative life we must loose the fear of being wrong.
Makerspace provides hands on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they engage in the different areas of STEAM. It provides a collaborative workspace and time for students to explore, fail and retry, and share their ideas with others. Makerspace allows students to design projects and follow the direction of their individual interests. It provides an inviting space for students to explore new and sometimes intimidating technologies and allows students to feel comfortable asking questions, which in turn exposes them to new ways of thinking. The goal of Makerspace is to empower students to see themselves as inventors, builders and creators. Makerspace allows learning new skills through trial and error, experiencing failure of an initial idea, the exploration of possible alternatives and then problem solving to improve on the idea.Richland students are asked to submit a proposal to the STEAM coordinator, after which they are welcome to come in during recess or Lunch times, with their class or other designated learning times. Richland’s Makerspace room was provided to us through a generous grant from Lowe’s of Carlsbad. We are excited to welcome our new STEAM Coordinator Elena Chirkova.
